Nationwide — The family of Shanquella Robinson, the young woman from Charlotte who tragically passed away during a trip to Mexico with her friends last October, is taking legal action against the Tubi series called Street Legal. A cease-and-desist letter has been sent to the show for allegedly using Shanquella’s identity and her untimely death without permission.

“We must express our profound dismay at the distressing misrepresentation and unauthorized use of Shanquella’s identity and the events surrounding her tragic passing,” wrote attorney Sue-Ann Robinson, according to Revolt.
The series, which is available on the Tubi streaming app, recently aired an episode titled “Frenemies,” which is said to have crossed a line by infringing on the legal rights of Shanquella and her family. It has caused them emotional distress by presenting an “inaccurate, disrespectful, and damaging” portrayal of the tragedy.
The cease-and-desist letter demanded the removal of the episode and any representation of Shanquella from Tubi and other platforms, a public apology, and compensation for the family.
Shanquella Robinson, who was 25 years old, had traveled to Mexico with 6 friends from college when she was found unconscious in the rented tourist property they were staying at.
Initially, her family was informed that she had died from alcohol poisoning. However, a disturbing video on social media showed her being attacked by one of her companions. It remains unclear when this video was recorded during the trip or whether her injuries led to her tragic demise.
In April, U.S. prosecutors decided not to pursue federal criminal charges in connection with Shanquella’s death due to insufficient evidence. In contrast, Mexican authorities have issued a warrant for a suspect and requested extradition for prosecution. A Mexican autopsy indicated severe spinal cord and neck injuries as the cause of her death, but a U.S. autopsy found discrepancies in these findings.
Moreover, the Robinson family’s legal action aims to address the alleged misrepresentation of Shanquella’s story in the Tubi series, seeking justice for her memory and the emotional distress it has caused her loved ones.
