A woman in Nashville has been charged with shooting a homeless man after he asked her to move her Porsche.

Katie Layne Quackenbush, 26, allegedly fired two warning shots when the man threatened her, according to her father. The man was shot in the abdomen, and Quackenbush is now facing attempted murder charges.

According to police, Gerald Melton, 54, was “trying to sleep on the sidewalk” around 3 a.m. on Monday when he “became disturbed by exhaust fumes and loud music coming from a Porsche SUV.” When Melton asked Quackenbush to move her vehicle, an argument broke out, and the two began yelling at each other.

Police said that Melton walked back to where he had been trying to sleep, only for Quackenbush to get out of her car, allegedly with the gun that she used to shoot him twice in the abdomen. Melton said that she then got back in her car and drove away.

However, her father, Jesse Quackenbush, said that his daughter was only firing warning shots and that she did not mean to kill him. Jesse said that his daughter was only acting in self-defense.

“He comes up to their window and starts screaming in their window various threats, and something about turning their music down and that he couldn’t sleep,” Jesse said.

“She did say she closed her eyes when she shot both times, but they were warnings, and she thought she pointed away from him,” Jesse later added.

Quackenbush is scheduled for a court appearance on October 6.
