In Memoriam: Stephen W. Jefferson, 1950-2018

Stephen W. Jefferson, who was a retired lecturer and former program director for the undergraduate program in sport management at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst,  died on February 9. He was 67 years old.

Dr. Jefferson, who was also known as Sabeur Bey, was a native of Newark, New Jersey, but went to high school in Easton, Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he was a star basketball player. At Rider, he set a rebounding record that stood for 37 years at the university.

Dr. Jefferson went on to earn a master’s degree at Montclair State University in New Jersey and a doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts.

Dr. Jefferson taught at the University of Massachusetts from 1999 to 2013 and directed the undergraduate sport management program from 1999 to 2011.
