Reverb and phase shift. We played with that in a radio studio in 1985.

Gated reverb isn’t the be all and end all of crap music but it mostly is.

This video is embarrassingly inaccurate; please take it down if you have any respect for integrity of research. The "mishap" you mention literally did not happen at all. Gabriel had heard the sound in Padgham's previous work with XTC, and was excited enough to build "Intruder" around it. Stop acting like music history is a game you can play for youtube hits.

Rush did this reverb on their albums recorded in Le Studio in Morinin heights Quebec. They used reverb off the local mountains. The Police also recorded there. Great video!

Wow compare the examples of 80s reverb to the examples from 2010s,proving yet again how garbage modern "music" is

No mention of Rick Allen's killer drum setup in Def Lep? His set is the Lambo of drum sets and that quintessential "80s sound". Hey, fellow Lep fans: find the re-mastered version of the Hysteria album and crank that puppy to volume "11"…your favorite songs will make your system–especially your car–sound like a concert!

Isn't the reverb history a bit short?
    Missing some systems I think…

An interesting thing about Kate Bush is that she also put gated reverb on her vocals on lots of tracks from Hounds of Love. Particularly on the title track you can hear this harsh echo on her voice.
