Five African American Scholars Taking on New Assignments in Higher Education

Gloria Boutte has been named the recipient of a Carolina Distinguished Professorship at the University of South Carolina. She has been a faculty member at the university since 1991 and founded the Center of Excellence for the Education and Equity of African American Studies in 2002.

Dr. Boutte holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, a master’s degree in child development from Iowa State University, and a Ph.D. in educational research from the University of South Carolina.

Katherine Jolly has been named associate professor of voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio. She was a faculty member at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

Dr. Jolly holds a bachelor of music degree in voice from Boston University, and a master of music degree and doctor of musical arts degree both in voice from the University of Cincinnati.

Cedric M. Bright has been named associate dean for admissions and clinical professor in the department of internal medicine in the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. He was associate dean for inclusive excellence at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Dr. Bright holds a medical doctorate from the University of North Carolina.

Ulysses Owens Jr. has been named faculty artist-in-residence at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, Florida. He is a two-time Grammy Award winning jazz musician and also serves as a professor in jazz studies department at The Juilliard School in New York City.

Owens is a graduate of the inaugural class of the jazz studies program at Juilliard.

Allan Richards has been elected world councilor for the North American region of the International Society for Education Through Art. He is an associate professor of art education at the University of Kentucky School of Art and Visual Studies.

Richards holds a master’s degree from the Institute Allende Incorporado a La Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico.
