Manute Bol Wasn’t The Age He Claimed To Be
In the past we’ve seen athletes who have lied about their age, but that seems to mostly happen in little league sports where some overly ambitious coach is thirsty to have a star player on his team.
We’ve never heard of anything like this.
According to a report on ZAGSBLOG, the college scout, Kevin Mackey, who brought the late Manute Bol to the United States to play basketball literally made up the 7’7″ African’s age.
“I gave him his birthday because they didn’t know how old he was,” Mackey, now a scout with the Indiana Pacers, told ZAGSBLOG.
Mackey goes on to say:
“Every athletic door is open at 19, every athletic door is closed when you’re 35,” said Mackey, 71. “He was probably 40, 50 years old when he was playing in the NBA.”
Bol’s Wikipedia page lists his birthdate as October 16, 1962, but they couch the assertion with the phrase “he is believed to have been born…”.
“[Bol] had no idea of his age and the kid who came over with him didn’t know how old he was,” Mackey said. “No one knew how old he was.
There you have it. A lil’ FYI. R.I.P. Manute Bol.
