If certain groups of students are unprepared for Harvard and other universities, why not focus your preparation on younger students? Why wait until so late in their educational development to improve outcomes and equalize participation in some many fields?

Baffled! Am I the only one the thinks Glenn is stringing a bunch of scientific sounding words and shooting them out in rapid succession to make it appear that it makes sense?

Glenn very well-argued points as usual but you do way too much talking and cut off your guests way too quickly. We're hear to listen to the guests as much if not more so than you the host. Please keep that in mind.

Dr. Loury, please consider getting neuroscientist on Richard Haier who recently wrote the Neuroscience of Intelligence. It would be an important discussion.

I think many Jews will always want to punish whites for historical wrongs done to them.
Jews seem to always talk "equality" in terms of fear of whites.

Laurence Kotlikoff's analysis would be more inviting if he stressed the public concern that Trump tapped into while expressing Trump's refusal to take the responsibility of being the presented solution seriously & his treatment of serious negotiations/conflicts as PR games in protracted political battles. His base hasn't protected the precious nature of their trust by handing it over to an uncritical person who acts on vibes without the adequate in-detail explanation of the fine print making the materializing of Trump's failures a damaging consequence to the trust of his base in political action with both "establishment" types & demagogues no longer sufficing just as a when the public stopped trusting huckster car salesmen.

I respect Mr Kotlikoff for keeping tabs on Washington's unfunded liabilities but dear god his suggestions for how to improve education and be more competitive are really damn bad.

Damn Glenn, Kotlikoff's white guilt just hindered him. White guilt is real. Not sure how I feel about affirmative Action since I benefit from it. Like how Glenn don't need to be a sjw and can speak openly. Much needed

What a weird and curt transition when Glenn's lazy 'it's not that easy' statement is clearly and easily refuted. I really like and appreciate Glenn, but he's way too far up his own ass sometimes.

Yikes, I'd believe Kotlikoff got into Harvard by accident. Too bad affirmative action didn't cost him his spot there. It would've spared us another gutless mediocrity.

I'm sorry but did he just claim disliking Soros makes one anti-semetic? Did it not occur to him that the dislike is more closely related to the huge sums of money he spends on political campaigns?

But no let's follow this chain of logic. Disliking billionaire donors who happen to be jewish is now racism. Aren't the Koch brothers jewish? Please tell me that when people criticize the Kochs I can call them racist. Let's play that game.

For the love of god keep AA out of STEM fields. Bridges need to stay up and planes need to stay in the air. Aptitude is too important to be playing games with diversity quotas.

Nearly two hours of Glenn? What a treat!

I found two statements by Larry to be very disingenuous. First he claims that Victor Orban is attacking Soros for being Jewish. He isn't, he exposed (and proved) that Soros organizations were trying to get Germany to exert pressure on Hungary to be more pro-Muslim migrants. Then he claims that being racist against Asians is fine, because racism is of all time and you have to keep fighting it. Uh, you aren't fighting it, you are engaging in it. You are the racist.

Wow Laurence Kotlikoff is way out there on schooling!
I am way out there too, I do not think schooling is so much for educating people but is more of a long test. See: https://www.city-journal.org/formal-education-16230.html
Have you ever noticed how little discussion there is in the world today of what knowledge and skills would most benefit people in their lives and what is the cheapest way to get those skills and that knowledge people to people. Instead we discuss how to teach children more and progress on that has been very slow and seems just come from overall changes in how to better teach which filter throughout society and through getting the lead out of gasoline and getting people good nutrition and parents learning.
Schooling is the cure all that has failed again and again.
Also a black person who could go to Harvard will do well enough if he goes to second tier University enough to help his children that the difference is insignificant and his degree is discounted.

BTW is it your position that majority black schools have lower quality teachers and higher quality coaches and music teacher that have produced most of the most popular style of music in the world? Black US citizens have achieved amazing positive things, just not in academics. White USAers should be more happy about what blacks have achieved.

BTW an option is AA for the descendants of slaves and of Native Americans.

Is the problem with the Roma that the successful Roma pass into the overall society (I heard that from a European)?

If women are under-represented in economics at this dude's school, it's not because of sexism, it's because few women are INTERESTED in economics.
Women are ahead of men at every level, from undergraduate to PhDs.
It's not sexism. It's that as women face more freedom of choice, they CHOOSE not to go into certain fields. They choose humanities over STEM fields. It's just a matter of interest.

The best one can do is treat each person as an individual & ignore their immutable characteristics. It's the only fair thing to do.

Reality says different populations, on average, going by population statistics, are going to perform at different levels. We are not all equally talented. We do not all function to the same level intellectually or along any metric. It's not nice, but that is how the world is.

The best a society can do is provide the best educational opportunities to everyone participating.
Afterwards, the chips lie where they do.

Once sorted, those at the bottom of the stack need to be treated with compassion and have specifically designed programs that allow them to succeed, & let them flourish, at the level they happen to fall into. Low stress, low complex careers need to be tailored to allow this class of people a respectable way of participating in society.

Elites also need to have the freedom to flourish. Society, equally, needs to give them a path that alignes with their abilities.
We can respect the janitor or the sewer cleaner as much as we respect the engineer or the doctor.

As long as everyone is working to their best ability, that should be seen as OK.
A society needs sewer cleaners just as much as it needs its engineers.

This doesn't mean you remunerate every profession at the same level. The market will take care of that. The only caveat should be that those at the lowest end of the scale earn a livable, beyond just surviving, wage.

This is where the Left has its place – ie put pressure on the society to set minimum standards of pay & benefits for those least capable.

What percentage of the Ivy League is comprised of non-Jewish white undergrads these days? Under 30%? Harvard at least seems to have no problem looking beyond the broad Asian category to single out underrepresented subgroups for affirmative action. Is it possible non-Jewish whites are reaching underrepresentation levels meriting attention/affirmative action?

These discussions need to start with a defining of what the term "equality" means to the speakers. Because it seems pretty amorphous and continually changing to me, and because of that I don't know how to assess the rest of their arguments.

This reminds me of a talk I attended by Hakeem Oluseyi who is an astrophysicist. He came from deep poverty in Mississippi. He had no family members who'd gone to college, etc. Most of his family had done jail time even. He fell in love with science as a teenager though and through hard work and a lot of serendipity he wound up being accepted to Stanford. But his first year there he realized that he was way under-prepared for education at Stanford. A professor advised him to take a remedial year so he could build his foundation and gain confidence. He did this and he said it made all the difference to him. So I do think one way to level the playing field is to offer more time to those who need it. This isn't condescending but simply teaching to the student's individual needs. Those needs might come out of a broken home and impoverished childhood or whatever.
